The height of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is a fundamental variable for understanding coupled biosphere-atmosphere interactions, modeling air quality, and predicting the occurrence of boundary layer clouds, among others. Our team investigates the spatial heterogeneity of PBL, to what extent biophysical processes drive the height of the PBL, and how we can produce better parameterizations for models of air quality, forest fires, and urban heat islands, among others.
